  1. Use T8 fluorescent lighting with electronic ballasts. Use compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in place of incandescent bulbs.
  2. Use a programmable thermostat to setback temperature.
  3. Insulate walls and roofs beyond code.
  4. Use ENERGY STAR® appliances.
  5. Perform air sealing at the top and bottom of the structure.
  6. Use high efficiency boilers and furnaces of 92% or better. Consider using a geothermal heat pump.
  7. Use a high SEER (13 or better) air conditioner.
  8. Use low-E windows, with U-values of 0.3 or less.
  9. Use ventilation heat recovery systems.
  10. Use demand control ventilation to schedule ventilation rates.
